Herb, the answer is yes. There is on the barrel eagle/N (Nitro proof) and eagle/J (= Instandsetzung; repair). According the German gun proof law it was necessary to reproof a gun when a substantial repair was carried out. A new barrel is such a case. Grip Markings? As mentioned earlier, each year and variation has different grip markings and has to be considered separately. For instance, the 1936 S/42’s are mostly blank with a very few numbered with the last two digits. The 1939 42’s are mostly blank or blank with a E/655, and again very few are numbered to the gun.The gesihert markings doesn't appear to be messed with. I guess the other markings could have been ground off since it was re blued but I'm still not convinced.
