The alternator is in the crankcase and blow-by from the piston rings will pressurize the case if it can't vent. I don't know the 800 engine, but a blowup of the engine should show you where the vent is. The bike physically goes into neutral but will not start unless the stand is up and clutch in even when in nuetral.
